━━━ A few days passed.
Inside the Botanical Garden, Lanpeach was diligently cutting down the stone briars, scraping away the accumulated mud from the floor, and clearing a path deeper inside.
Outside, the accumulated dirt on the ceiling had been scraped off, revealing what was once a crystal glass roof. Sunlight now poured in, eliminating the need for lights, and the once dark interior was now much brighter, significantly expanding the area they could work in.
“This kind of monotonous work might actually suit me.” (Lanpeach)
Lanpeach wiped the sweat off his forehead and flashed a bright villainous grin. Even when he smiled brightly, he still looked like a villain -such was the law of the world.
The sound of the axe biting into the stone briars echoed, and when a crack appeared in the thick briar, which was about two meters in diameter, the weakened plant began to collapse under its own weight. Since he had aimed for the base, the entire briar fell, creating a small clearing in the dense thicket.
“Phew, I think I’ll take a break. Keeping things moderate is key to staying motivated at work.” (Lanpeach)
Lanpeach stepped back and sprawled out on the summer chair in the clearing, yawning deeply. Maybe he was getting old, he felt drowsy.
“Boss, here’s an ice-cold beer.”
“Thanks. Nothing beats a beer after a hard day’s work.” (Lanpeach)
He nodded in satisfaction and took a big gulp. The cold beer slid down his throat, cooling his tired body.
“Kuu! That’s good. Give me another.” (Lanpeach)
He placed the mug back on the table while wiping the foam from his lips.
“Sure thing, I’ll get it right away.”
The sun had just reached its peak, and it would be lunchtime soon. For Lanpeach, work was already done for the day.
“Let’s finish Boss’s quota!”
“Leave it to me!”
“Let’s get fired up!”
“Hey, doesn’t this assignment seem unfair? Or is it just me?”
Other workers had already started cutting down the stone briars in the area assigned to Lanpeach. With several workers hacking away, Lanpeach would likely finish his work first again today. No one wanted unpaid overtime after all.
Lanpeach seemed every bit like a boss working his rough crew, enjoying a comfortable work life thanks to Mira handling things behind the scenes.
“This is probably the hardest I’ve ever worked at a part-time job” -Lanpeach thought. His second-hardest was a job delivering New Year’s cards in his previous life, where he lucked out by being assigned the area around his apartment complex, making the work easy.
“Oh, and make sure to bring me some snacks. I am craving bacon today. The crispy type.” (Lanpeach)
He let out a contented sigh as he reached for his beer, only to find it empty. He sighed again. Is it just his imagination that the floating girl nearby had foam on her lips? It must be.
[Mira is working hard creating an organization, you know… Libra-san.] (Lanpeach)
[I’m doing my best too! This bacon was cooked in oil. Bacon should be fried without anything!] (Libra)
Libra-san munched on the bacon on the table as she responded sharply. As expected of the original support character; her efficiency was almost tear-inducing.
Well, Libra is a soothing presence, and that’s good enough.
“Aah, this is nice. If all jobs were like this, I’d do this forever.” (Lanpeach)
Lanpeach sprawled out, now resembling a pile of junk, or maybe a walrus. But not everyone was enjoying this peaceful work life.
The deputy supervisor came stomping toward the busy Lanpeach, his eyes gleaming sharply.
The tension in the air grew as the people around thought Lanpeach was going to get scolded. The deputy opened his mouth.
“Lanpeach-sama, thank you for the dozen super-premium fish, pike, you gave me yesterday. I’ve never had such quality fish before, and I was blown away by how delicious it was. Pike is quite fatty and tasty, isn’t it?”
Lanpeach had shared the pike as there had been an abundance. There were no hidden intentions. Even in his past life, super-premium pike was well-received.
“Oh, fresh pike can be eaten all the way to the guts. Pike, oh pike, is it bitter or salty? Huh? That makes it sound terrible.” (Lanpeach)
The poet Lanpeach scratched his head in confusion. It was a famous poem, but it didn’t convey the deliciousness of pike at all.
“It wasn’t salty at all and the fat was sweet.”
“Exactly, I thought the same. Where’s the salty part? Maybe the poet messed up cooking the pike.” (Lanpeach)
They both laughed, enjoying their pointless conversation about pike. However, the deputy checked his watch and brought their idle chatter to an end.
“Well, I have work to do, so I’ll take my leave.”
“Alright. Do your best at work.” (Lanpeach)
Lanpeach waved lightly as the deputy departed after saluting. It was unclear who was superior at this point.
Currently, people are talking about how Lanpeach is probably the boss of a group managing explorers ranked Star 1 or below. Even if it is a rumor, it is still their perception of this, and it was apparently also recorded in the city’s dangerous people database of the Surface District.
It seems Mira has been hard at work spreading this deception, carefully leaking information to the right places, making it impossible for the academy’s officials to uncover Lanpeach’s true identity. He had no idea how she was doing this, but it is some impressive skills.
Since he is moving so boldly, anyone who conducted a serious investigation would soon find out he is the boss of Lanpeach City, but few people would bother going that far.
Why? Because his role as a minor villain boss suited him too well, and people just assumed he was a minor figure controlling low-level explorers for petty gains.
So Lanpeach lounged in his summer chair, drinking beer and watching Libra, who was fiddling with her outfit after dropping a piece of bacon between her breasts. He was clearly very busy.
Thus, everyone worked quietly, leaving him alone. Even the guards glanced at him but didn’t interfere, knowing it would be too much trouble.
“Still, how long will it take to cut down all these stone briars? It’s boring.” (Lanpeach)
[At this pace, it’ll probably take years. It isn’t progressing at all.] (Libra)
It is as Libra said. There’s a lot more stone briars in the botanical garden than expected.
It is to the point that it would be better to just burn it all down with napalm before actually trimming down.
[We don’t have the time to be wasting here, right?] (Lanpeach)
Lanpeach’s goal wasn’t this botanical garden but the ruins below.
[Right, but I predict quests will emerge from this garden too] (Mira)
Mira’s call came through right on time.
[So a fate where many people will die is coming soon?] (Lanpeach)
[I want more bacon!] (Libra)
Then there’s Libra, who had finished the crispy bacon. Did this girl forget why she is even here?
[I want some bacon too. Let’s switch roles, you ero shrine maiden.] (Mira)
[No~pe. You need someone with my level of performance to satisfy Soldier!] (Libra)
[Kuh, I admit defeat on that one point alone.] (Mira)
Libra-san smugly crossed her arms, emphasizing her chest. Just that action of crossing her arms made them shake heavily. On the opposite side, there’s Mira who can cross her arms easily.
Mira was showing a rare sight of frustration and Libra was proud of herself.
(But, Libra-san, are you satisfied being a support character only for that one thing? …Well, I am.) (Lanpeach)
[Back to business. So, what’s the plan now?] (Lanpeach)
[Let’s get another beer.] (Libra)
[It just means the Minor Villain skill comes with a variety of bad rep.] (Mira)
Lanpeach ignored the auditory hallucination and turned to Mira, about to ask what she meant, but…
“This way, please. All you need to do is destroy those stone briars. I apologize for making you do such simple work.”
Genma came in from the entrance, followed by a group of children, all wearing the academy’s uniforms.
[Looks like someone’s fallen behind schedule, Pla-san.] (Mira)
Lanpeach furrowed his brows, wondering what she meant.
Genma flashed a wicked grin at Lanpeach, clearly harboring some resentment towards him.
This man considers the hard-working Lanpeach as a sworn enemy.
“We’re sorry, students of the magic academy, but it seems these explorers are dragging their feet to squeeze more money out of the job. I know it’s not much, but could you use magic to quickly clear these stone briars?” (Genma)
Lanpeach understood what was going on here and directed eyes of exasperation.
[The supervisor thinks we’re deliberately working slowly to milk this job for all it’s worth, even though I’ve already met my quota and worked diligently. What a jerk.] (Lanpeach)
He took a swig of his beer, frowning in annoyance. After all his hard work, this is the thanks he gets? Must be the downside of Minor Villain.
[Hm? Shouldn’t they have used magic to blow the briars away in the first place?] (Libra)
[True. Why didn’t they?] (Lanpeach)
Libra raised a valid point. Why?
[You’ll find out soon with their spells.] (Mira)
Mira replied indifferently.
The students stepped forward.
“Can’t be helped. This job’s so easy I could finish it alone.”
“Hah, this is nothing.”
“Let’s go all out!”
“Still the same as ever, huh.”
Confidently standing at the front was Krishna, along with several other boys and girls. They raised their hands, channeling magic.
Seeing this, one of the guards turned pale and raised his hand to stop them, but it was too late.
[Storm]
[Fireball]
[Wind Cutter]
Various spells flew toward the stone briars, shattering them instantly.
The work that had been painstakingly done by hand was completed in moments, leaving a wide-open space.
“Uhahaha! See that, you crook? I won’t let you make money off this job. You see how experienced I am!” (Genma)
Genma laughed loudly. Looks like he had a lot of pent up frustration.
He boasted at Lanpeach.
“Alright, this part-time job is easy for me. I will mow through this—-hm? What’s with this cry?” (Krishna)
Krishna took a step forward with determination but then abruptly stopped. The entire forest of stone briars began to rustle violently, and a chorus of screeching cries from unknown creatures echoed all around.
“What have you done?! There are numerous monsters living in this botanical garden! Using large-scale magic like that will provoke a stampede!”
The head of security shouted in anger, and Genma began to panic as his face turned pale.
“Eh? R-Really? So that’s why they didn’t hire any mages?” (Genma)
It seemed that gathering the students had been Genma’s decision. Realizing the gravity of the situation, the guards braced themselves, and the students started to panic.
“Watch out— Gah!”
A guard who had been standing closest to the stone briars cried out as liquid splashed onto his face. His body collapsed, and in an instant, he had turned into a gray stone statue, frozen in mid-warning.
“It’s petrifying poison! Activate your spirit barriers!”
Another guard deployed a spirit barrier, but a shower of toxic liquid poured down, shattering the barrier and petrifying him as well.
“U-Uwaaah!”
Someone’s scream pierced the air as the poisonous rain continued to pour out from between the stone briars, raining down on the students.
The remnants of stone briars and the carcasses of Medusa Snakes and Stone Eaters littered…
Petrifying poison holds immense mana. What this means is that half-hearted spirit barriers will be…
