MV – Chapter 28: The Minor Villain is sad about war

Previous Chapter l Next Chapter

The first base defense ended.

The battle was 100 vs 1.

Expose the lack of connections from Lanpeach, die without being able to defend himself properly, and become the new boss of the Lanpeach Complex.

That was the destined development.

But that person rewrote destiny… Lanpeach, who knew the developments of the game and knew of the best methods to clear it, didn’t increase his own combat power, but obtained base defense techniques to change his own destiny.

He made best use of the Artificial Spirits for combat and defeated 100 enemies and a mercenary wearing Spirit Armor.

This drove in shock and fear on the other teams who were looking from afar to find an opportunity to steal the base.

They destroyed the walls of the building they were supposed to be protecting as if it were paper. Moreover, they have enough power to even destroy the walls of neighboring buildings.

Weapons that you can only think of as madness and actions that don’t care about destruction.

Way too strong of an impact.

The people of the slums were already thinking there existed some backbone that must not be touched after witnessing that overwhelming combat power.

They have judged that there won’t be any issues as long as a big team doesn’t try to pull something. With how big the backbone is, they are assuming they won’t be becoming the bosses of the slums, but doing some sort of experiments.

And so, the small to medium teams are looking to get some leftovers from this, wondering if they can drink a bit of that sweet nectar.

A single base defense battle has created a big ripple in the slums, and will bring about big conflict and chaos, but…

Lanpeach didn’t notice.

Lanpeach had the game perspective, and he only thought of this as having finished a single defense battle. Nothing more, nothing less.

He wasn’t thinking about the influence on its surroundings, and he thought this degree of defense power was normal for the Surface District, so there shouldn’t be any issues.

And so, Lanpeach’s cognition stayed that of a weak team, and there was no one who would tell him that difference.

◇◇

There’s no way to know what was happening outside. The current state of the Lanpeach Complex was tragic.

“Ooh… They defeated them flashily… What hell is this?” (Lanpeach)

[Rabbit hell~, rabbit hell~, 3 carrots as transit fee.] (Libra)

Lanpeach had cold sweat after seeing the state of the lower floors and sighed.

The impish Libra floated by his side while snickering with a ‘pupupu’.

She is not a shrine maiden but an imp, so can’t she grow a demon’s tail and wings?

What was spreading in front of the eyes of Lanpeach and the others was a pool of blood from many corpses, and the destroyed walls, floor, and ceiling from the building.

There was even more rubble, and the building was in more ruins than before.

“The corpses are one thing, but if they continue to destroy the walls of the building, I feel like this building will collapse. I feel like everything below the 3rd floor would disappear.” (Lanpeach)

This is different from the game.

The base defenses in the game didn’t destroy the base, and had infinite durability. Moreover, the corpses and boss would disappear, and would return to how the base originally looked.

“Hmm, Artificial Spirits are strong. Maybe stronger than me? That strong?” (Dry)

“Haah… I don’t know what to say… But I would have been done for if Lan didn’t save me. Thank you very much.” (Chihiro)

Dry tilted her head while holding a rabbit.

The defense battle ended, so the clothes and guns have been stored into a pocket dimension, and they became just cute plush-like rabbits.

Chihiro was about to say something, but she closed her mouth, and lowered her head deeply.

But the two of them had cold sweat. They didn’t pursue the topic of how horrible this scene is.

That’s obvious.

Lanpeach himself wants to hold his head and curl up after all.

“War is so empty… Cleaning up is more trouble.” (Lanpeach)

[Yup yup, no matter the era, the clean up is more of a pain than the battle. It is made in a way so that the politicians and the enterprises rake in the money for cleaning up after all.] (Libra)

(Aah, it is because I really understand that that makes me dislike it more. Guess I will try to work as both a politician and an enterprise.) (Lanpeach)

Libra agreed and was observing the state of Lanpeach. And then, she judged that there was no guilt from having killed people and he was simply finding this a pain.

(Looks like the mind protection of Soldier from the humanity strengthening program is working without issues. You would normally feel a bit of guilt regardless though… Why is it that Soldier doesn’t feel disgust or guilt? Should keep an eye.) (Libra)

The person who has the humanity strengthening program has a filter in order to erase the displeasure towards war. They don’t feel apprehension or guilt towards killing people.

That said, controlling the mind of a person hampers their growth greatly and is detrimental for them, so it is kept to the bare minimum.

That’s why Lanpeach should be making a displeased expression here, and yet, he didn’t have one bit of this which puzzled Libra.

Even Libra, the computer terminal of the Space Library that is the amalgamation of information created by the peak of human engineering, could imagine that Lanpeach is separating himself from reality by thinking this is a game world.

“Well, no choice. Taraworkers, please clean up this whole place nicely.” (Lanpeach)

He thought it would end with just giving an order to the Taraworkers…but the Taraworkers he brought were not moving for some reason.

“Hm? What’s the matter? First, clean up the corpses. Then, repair the walls and ceiling.” (Lanpeach)

He thought he had messed up in the operation somehow, so he gave them the order again.

5 to clean up the corpses and 5 for repairing the building.

But the only ones that moved were the 5 that were ordered to clean up the corpses.

They promptly got rid of the pools of blood, and disassembled the corpses.

“Hm? A malfunction? Come on, move.” (Lanpeach)

Lanpeach poked at them and the visors faced him. Lanpeach got scared by this and took a step back.

A clipboard showed up with a whirring sound from the back of the Taraworker.

There’s something written on the clipboard.

[You destroyed it yourself, so please repair it yourself. I don’t want to work-de gozaru.]

Lanpeach was dumbstruck by the unbelievable response and groaned.

“E-Eh?! Seriously, that’s how it works? I didn’t hear anything about this!” (Lanpeach)

[That’s why they are Taraworkers, Soldier. The Taraworkers have the feature of ignoring the orders of their master if they pointlessly destroy things in order to reprimand them.] (Libra)

(Tell me that sooner! I don’t need such a hidden setting!) (Lanpeach)

Lanpeach was flustered about how the building would collapse at this rate.

He restlessly touched the Taraworkers to make them move somehow, but they didn’t budge an inch.

This flustered appearance of a crook strengthened their assumption that these Artificial Spirits were given to him, but he didn’t read the manual and showed a pathetic sight of not being able to use them.

Chihiro was strangely relieved by that appearance of his and chuckled.

“Uhm, Lan, were you not given a manual when you were given these Artificial Spirits?” (Chihiro)

“Manual… It was such a pain I didn’t read it.” (Lanpeach)

Lanpeach faced away and answered in a low voice.

Lanpeach obviously didn’t read it. Or more like, you can tell how to use them if you check the help window, but there’s no such information anywhere.

It is a downside from becoming reality.

Looks like the features of the game are intricately different in this world.

Lanpeach felt awkward about the lukewarm eyes of Chihiro and the baffled faces of the team members.

“Yeah…I will ask for a method to solve this. Wait a moment.” (Lanpeach)

He waved his hand to play it off and looked up at the sky, acting as if he was contacting someone.

(So, Libra, please tell me, how do I make the Taraworkers work? You know, right?) (Lanpeach)

It is at times like this when the support character shines. It felt like this girl would forget the point of support if he doesn’t use the help function.

[Can’t be helped~. I guess I will tell you if you give me some pastries. I am craving something sweet.] (Libra)

(Mumumu… So crafty. Got it. Can I pay you later?) (Lanpeach)

She requested for a normal transaction, so he thought this is different from the game as well, sighed, and nodded. Moreover, she went for the extravagant with sweets.

[Let’s go to the Spirit Ward already. There’s no fun without hunting monsters and retrieving spirit crystals.] (Libra)

(Okay. I was planning on going there when I finished leveling up.) (Lanpeach)

He planned on going to the Spirit Ward to begin with. It seemed like he could earn good money there, so there’s no issues.

[From here on, you will dance and worship Libra-sama every day!] (Libra)

(Don’t get ahead of yourself. If you don’t tell me already, I will give you the cheapest sweets.) (Lanpeach)

He felt like she was going to be giving out conditions endlessly here, so he decided to cut it off. If he didn’t, she might continue escalating, and may end up telling him to treat her like a god at the end.

[Taraworkers move if you give them food.] (Libra)

(What’s that? Is that how all Artificial Spirits operate? Oh well, got it.) (Lanpeach)

Lanpeach took out a Gadokurie Mate from his pocket and placed it in front of the Taraworker.

The Taraworker moved just as Libra said, flipped over, and showed its stomach.

The clipboard also has written [Strike]. Looks like it liked the Gadokurie Mate.

“A Gadokurie Mate is fine then. Endure, we have no food right now! Ah, maybe they eat rabbits?” (Lanpeach)

“Kyaah! This commander is horrible-usa! It is rabbit abuse-usa!”

The rabbit that was being carried by Dry began to struggle and ran off.

It hid in the shadow of the building, and peeked while trembling, so it made him feel bad to the max.

“My bad. That was a joke, a joke. I will buy food for you as thanks for the battle. And so, is it okay for the Taraworker-samas to get paid later, I wonder?” (Lanpeach)

The minor villain Lanpeach rubbed his hands together in a gesture that oozed credibility.

The Taraworkers showed their stomachs without moving because of how high that credibility of his was, and the rabbits were slowly approaching with sparkling eyes as if saying ‘is it time for food?’.

He was worried by how little cautiousness the rabbits have.

“Please! I plead of you, oh great Taraworker-samas!” (Lanpeach)

Lanpeach lowered his head and the Taraworkers finally began the repairs.

(Ununu, this was such an unnecessary event.) (Lanpeach)

[Ahahaha, this event suits you perfectly, Soldier. Ahaha.] (Libra)

The fist of Lanpeach trembled with the desire to punch Libra who was rolling in laughter, but he endured it.

“Guess I should earning funds.” (Lanpeach)

Lanpeach was thinking about selling the Spirit Armor he got from Jakots first, so he exited the base and headed to the Surface District again.
