Tsuki – Chapter 416: A hectic lax day

Looking at it from the side, this city is always hectic.

Weirdos, eccentrics, geniuses, and prodigies gather all the time on the border of the world, and would devote themselves to exploring without caring about the current state of the world.

As a result of this, the new materials that show up one after the other give birth to new products, bringing in money, and attracting merchants.

An endless cycle.

The city called Tsige has been protecting the world from the threats of the wasteland and would repeat this cycle.

Truly hectic days.

Since the time it began to be called a country instead, that image not only hasn’t changed, rather, it has strengthened.

But when you are inside of it, you will be able to see there’s also unexpectedly lax parts too.

It is a mysterious thing, but even this place that continues changing has their daily lives, and the adventurers, merchants, craftsmen, laborers, and the citizens at pretty much their own pace.

It may also be because they grow numb to the changes inside though.

For example; this orphanage that I am leaving under the care of Tomoe.

“Sli.”

“Me.”

“Fa.”

“Rm.”

Is what’s written colorfully on the sign that’s screaming handmade.

The place is at the limits of the Weitz Orphanage’s garden.

At this time when the sun is still high up, the children are exercising and working energetically today as well.

It is a truly pleasing sight.

…Mostly.

“Just what in the world is a slime farm…?” (Makoto)

No, even I can tell it is exactly as the name states.

I can feel a great amount of slime presences that should normally not be here after all.

There’s more than 100.

From what I have investigated, they are not the fiendish ones you find in the wasteland, but the relatively safe ones that inhabit a part of the Aion Kingdom.

The ones that serve as the ingredients for the slime dish that Toa taught us recently.

Not only do they tremble as if in a good mood, they don’t bring harm to the children.

Whichever the case, the details are way too much of a mystery.

I don’t get it at all.

Tomoe said something interesting had been made, so to check it out if I wanted a change in pace. And so, here I am after a while, and honestly, I am plain surprised at how unexpected this is.

“Ah, Raidou-san!”

“Raidou-dono, it has been a while. The last time was when we went to the company to give a progress report.”

The ones who noticed me and spoke to me were Toa -the one who came up with the slime farm idea- and the tamer Baretta -who I was acquainted with recently.

I haven’t met the both of them in a while, but…there’s no doubt they are related parties here.

“This is an unusual pairing.” (Makoto)

“Ahaha, our party did get requested to support this guy as well. We are throwing most of the work to Bir-kun and his group though.” (Toa)

“I am teaching them how to tame and train slimes on their request, and it is pretty interesting. The children here learn fast, and maybe the environment matched them, a farm was established in the blink of an eye.” (Baretta)

‘Them’, huh.

The tamers currently view mamonos and demonic beasts as expendables.

Looks like that view of his is being changed little by little.

That ‘them’ just now was without doubt referring to the slimes.

Anyways…environment, huh.

I make a wry smile and look up.

There was a giant tree spreading its branches and leaves widely.

Most of the slimes were passing their time pleasantly at the shade of the tree or on the branches.

When I think back to the fact that this was originally the elf that did inhuman things, how to say it, this guy must be feeling pretty terrible here.

“Those slimes…did you bring them here?” (Makoto)

I try to confirm with Toa just in case.

“…Aah, there’s a variety of circumstances around this. I didn’t expect that the core I tried to get unhurt could stay alive for a while without the gel.” (Toa)

“…Toa?” (Makoto)

“I stored them not as goods to turn into money, but as preserved food, so I didn’t really concentrate much on the core.” (Toa)

“…”

“When we left them randomly at the house, they would come back to life when we were absent.” (Toa)

“Wa?!” (Makoto)

In other words, the slimes would come back to life in the house when only Rinon was present?!

“If this Dio-kun guy hadn’t come by coincidence at that time to greet us, it would have turned into one big mess. Teehee.” (Toa)

Dio, who is originally from Aion, knew about these slimes, and he managed to deal with them calmly.

Thanks to that, it ended up just being a story between friends.

“…Can mess ups be passed on…?” (Makoto)

I ended up thinking about the young man in her competent party that cannot be trusted at all.

“Did he infect someone, or did it relapse? See, we have done pretty big mess ups before, so…this stuff is just…” (Toa)

Even though they may have been weak slimes that even Rinon could defeat without any problem, just imagining that scenario sends chills down my spine.

Toa may have given her a variety of things for self-defense, but it is not like she herself has high combat power.

“She must have been mighty pissed.” (Makoto)

“Of course. I don’t want to remember that. I am grateful to Dio-kun.” (Toa)

She must have remembered it a bit, her face went pale.

“He is a guy that can do it when the time requires it after all!” (Baretta)

Looks like there’s no doubt he and Baretta are acquainted.

I threw that matter to Root, but it looks like they must have been in a decently close relationship.

He is getting happy about Dio being praised as if he was the one being praised.

“Dio…speaking of him, has it been decided what will be done with him?” (Makoto)

I tried asking the two what suddenly crossed my mind.

He must have reached an understanding on what happened to himself, so maybe he returned to Aion?

“It seems he wants to do his best as a member of this country. I heard he went to try and join the army.” (Baretta)

He wasn’t aiming to be an adventurer but a soldier.

Moreover, not in the army of Aion but Tsige.

“He likes the action of protecting. It has been like that since forever. I thought for sure he would become a soldier of the Aion Kingdom, but it unexpectedly ended up being here. That was surprising.” (Baretta)

According to Rembrandt, the army of Tsige will only be used for defense.

Meaning that it is not like they won’t fight, but that they will not be used for invasions.

I am not taking those words at face value, but you could say they are indeed an army for protection.

He did say that he wanted to make it possible for them to deal with disasters and urgent public works, so…if I were to go by that definition, then they would be more like the self-defense force.

“If Dio says he wants to do that, I will simply tag along. This genius tamer will be adding demonic beast squads to the army of Tsige, and they will be invincible…eventually!” (Baretta)

…That sounds like a squad that would definitely be used for invasions though.

Well, it is great to see that the self-proclaimed genius tamer has found an objective.

Maybe him reuniting with Dio served as the trigger for his sudden growth as a tamer?

“Looking forward to it. By the way, these slimes, could it be that you introduced them here as a way to improve the food conditions of the orphanage?” (Makoto)

I ask Toa this one last thing that was bothering me.

Breeding animals as sustenance feels a bit too difficult for children to do even if it is an orphanage.

Of course, even if it is an effective method to teach about life.

“There’s that, but Tomoe-sama said that it would serve as practical experience to obtain methods for earning money themselves.” (Toa)

No experience is better than practical experience.

That does sound like Tomoe.

“I see…so she has already green lighted it. Then…” (Makoto)

“However…” (Toa)

“?”

“Just as I said before, these slimes, when you take their core out cleanly, they come back to life.” (Toa)

“…Ah.” (Makoto)

The picture of trimming a sheep surfaced in my mind for a second.

I see, in other words…

“Right. If properly trained, they can easily obtain food without having to take their lives. Of course, there might be times when they break their cores, but these slimes breed fast so it is easy to increase their numbers…” (Toa)

Toa said it is okay. If things turned out like this from just one slime she left behind, then they really do have quite the breeding capability.

I see. If they make the tree their home, Tomoe only needs to prepare a barrier and there will be no need to fear them escaping.

And so, operations began quickly, so she wanted me to see it.

I understand now.

Also, it certainly relieved some of my stress.

“I see. If things go well, the children that have come of age and have to leave the orphanage can instead have the choice of working at the slime farm that will be expanding. One more job option will appear.” (Makoto)

Taking lives, but teach the meaning of that to them in a mild manner first.

This really covers a wide array of areas.

It is not like there aren’t any points of worry though.

“Ooh, Waka! You have arrived quite early!” (Tomoe)

Speaking of the devil, it is Tomoe.

However, it makes me wonder if she was always this thoughtful towards children.

I feel like there’s a hidden scheme here.

“The most amusing part is that these slimes seem to have taken a liking to this tree. This is a mysterious case where the people connected to us aligned and things have gone well. I ended up with an urge to have Waka check it out too.” (Tomoe)

Tomoe must have thought back to the toxicity of the Dusk Street, she laughed in the same way as me.

It is dark and slimy compared to the smiles of the children.

“Well then, since we are already here, how about hearing the reports of the director and the others, Tomoe?” (Makoto)

“Yeah, let’s take our time.” (Tomoe)

From what I can see, she is also relaxed.

But the contents are hectic.

The childhood friend of Lime was also working here, right?

Hope they are all doing well.

  • The previous chapter had me thinking. Has Tomoe and Mio talked with the mc more about kids. Also they need to talk to him more like that. Especially to bring up to rethink his life span. Maybe put in the seeds of thinking about extending his life span. Especially since i doubt they want to be one day without him. Like explain things in how they would feel without him. Plus add in the point of asora ceasing to exist, when he would pass on. So it would not only affect them greatly, but also affect his people as well.

    • They definitely didn't talk at all about kids with him otherwise he would have said so in his monologs

  • “There’s that, but Tomoe-sama said that it would serve as practical experience to obtain methods for earning money themselves.” (Toa)

No experience is better than practical experience.

    • I think that it's not mistranslated.

It's more like "No Slime is better than Rimuru" if you get my point. It's not that "Having no experience is better than having practical exp." It's more like "There's no experience like practical experience."

I hope you get my point.

      • Okay. Seems like it's jumbled in its' order or missing a qualifier. Should've been like your last rephrased statement. Something like, "There's no better experience than practical experience." Thanks!

  • “Ooh, Waka! You have arrived quite early!” (Tomoe)

Speaking of the devil, it is Tomoe.

However, it makes me wonder if she was always this thoughtful towards children.

I feel like there’s a hidden scheme here.

Me: She's having practice for child caring when she has children in the future for reference.

    • That's how i see it as well. Especially since the chapter that introduced all the orphanage stuff in general. She wanted to know if he would be good with kids. She got her answer. lol

  • However, it makes me wonder if she was always this thoughtful towards children.
I feel like there’s a hidden scheme here.

Is there going to be a Makoto jr soon?

    • That's definitely what Tomoe wants, she's be thinking/talking about it ever since Root told her that Superior dragons can breed with humans

  • When you're in another world and don't have a console to play Slime Rancher on that you create your own Slime Rancher.

  • Since Tsige got its independence the novel has really slowed down to a crawl. I don't like the author basically changed genres altogether and now this is a kingdom builder simulator. Nothing against the genre but I began reading this story for Makoto and his closest aides.

    • Well nothing you can do since this arc is about how the daily life of them works, and this sort of stuff was usually skipped by a time skip that is used frequently.
And from a character creation wise only Makoto is the one that can keep evolving because of reasons while Tomoe and Mio are already established before as lovely monster wifes.

    • I see no problem with it as makoto and his aides are helping build up tsige the town they live in and considering how the story is playing out this might be the best thing to show case as they will now have a buffer against other countries that support the goddess, it’s slow but it’s setting up so much more as well as giving us a resolution to various problems they would have had when facing off against the goddess as root will support them but the adventurers of origin won’t so setting up a country with a strong defense force or a country that is being heavily relied on can be a great shield against various forces

Basically think of tsige becoming like China in the fact that as a provider China can’t be targeted nor antagonized by other countries without it becoming a major problem for everyone

      • You know that still doesn't invalidate my criticism, right? Tsuki has always had some minor element of kingdom building with Asora but it was nicely balanced with the adventures of Makoto and his close retainers.

The book as of now is more about everyone else but Makoto. He is more of a narrator rather than a character.

          • That wasn't the point of the other commenter.
What they were arguing about with me was that readers should shut up and read whatever an author writes and that to critic something was to be entitled.

I'm entirely aware this is a translation site and I was just saying I'm not a fan of the current pacing and narrative balance between the realm building and the more personal stories of the main cast. It all devolved to both of us basically talking to a wall though

          • The only arc i didn't like was the Lorel Union arc. It was just a mess story wise, to power scaling wise. And some if not most of the characters that were added, just weren't ones i liked personally. Especially the assassin of apple. Since he reminded me too much of root. And the less of root i see, the happier i am. lol Even the mc doesn't trust root at all. And makes sure to only have to deal with root, when the mc needs info only root has.

          • I do agree with valkyrie that the constant bemoaning isn't fun, as well, even though the author even took a large break, I feel like things are at a similar pace, besides, if you actually look at the setup of the world, this series wasn't really geared towards action so much as large scale wars.. in the distance, "threats" came to makoto, not the other way around, it's always seemed to care more about world building and city/ nation building more than action, I mean... Makoto doesn't even want to actually kill bug but humiliate her/ punch her in the face, which she deserves, you know? If this were more action oriented than makoto would probs have a goal, ie, returning home no matter what and destroying anything in your way, becoming the strongest possible, becoming king of the pirates, becoming hokage, living life to the fullest after reincarnating (into protecting his family) etc etc... makoto's end goal is... uh... maybe living a happy life while he continues practicing the bow? Definitely training the bow at least, but... other than that, even punching the goddess isn't an ACTIVE goal, it's like a side quest that you'll get to if you are in the area... oh wait! He does have an active goal... to be a merchant! Oh wait... that's not really an active goal because he doesn't REALLY care how successful he really is... if you want action, makoto is not the guy you want as a main character because he's reactionary and doesn't care about fighting, if no enemies come to him, then it will continue this way forever

          • That's how everyone reading this story should look at it. Makoto is mostly passive. He only makes his moves when necessary. He wants to play merchant and get his revenge on the Bug and that's all. For some reason he now has a family and a bigger family he has to protect and take care of. His 'family' wants him to rule over them like a king and he is now learning to do this. Also when it comes to the war, people who are actually following the story will realize it will be like how he was forced to fight Sophia. He will be minding his own business and the war will catch up to him. And that's how it has always been.

        • You do know that a Lull indicates a break in the action? As in taking a break from constant war and endlessly escalating battles.

Sure, it's not what YOU want, but it's the author's story, not yours. If he wants to take a break from having to constantly feed your adrenaline addiction, it's his prerogative. I haven't had an issue with it.

          • Sigh, I see you don't understand what is the point of making a critic on something ones enjoy. Sure, whatever you say, let's make it so I'm a adrenaline junkie and you are an intolerant fanboy

          • No, what I see is a sense of entitlement.

I've been a writer for a long time. I've dealt with comments like yours for years. Fans who think that the story I have worked out so carefully in my head should be switched with the story they wrote in theirs instead. I've told them time and again that if they want "their" story, write it "their way" otherwise, stop bitching at me to tell their story INSTEAD OF MY OWN.

All through this story, I keep seeing people bitch about how it's "not what they want." SO WHAT? It's not YOUR STORY. And let's be blunt here, this is a TRANSLATION SITE. Your complaints aren't even being seen by the author, so really what is the point?

The author has a story he wishes to tell. Enjoy it or don't. I am just tired of seeing so many entitled "fans" who think THEY COULD DO IT BETTER.

So if you think you can, go do it. Then I can enjoy the story you want to tell, and you can see why people telling you what and how to write is so fucking annoying.

          • Good job here. As a writer myself, I appreciate you. Writing a compelling story is not easy. Sometimes you have to research so much to create a certain character and people will be saying whatever because they don't like that character. Of course, I know we think this way because we have taken our time to write our own stories. A rich person doesn't know the struggles of the needy and vice versa

          • You sound way too bitter. So I'm not allowed to express my opinion because it sounds like entitlement to you? Or because this is a translation site? I say you should consider therapy or change professions, it sounds like being on the internet has taken a real toll on your mental.

Edit: I went back to my original comment to double check and I don't see where you got that I was entitled. Paraphrasing what I said "I don't like the current book, I liked it better when we got more balanced stuff". You are projecting way too much your own feelings here.

          • Well, it's apparent you've never been in the role of actually being an author yourself, since this seems impossible for you to understand.

We do not know what the author has planned. What seems like "pointless" world building, and "unbalanced" to you is probably being done because the author HAS A PLAN, and is setting things up for a later section of the story.

I cannot say if they do or not, but I can recall so many times in the past where I would hear similar statements to your, and MANY MANY OTHERS in these comments, and would have to reply, "No, if I did that, it would derail the plot entirely." or "If I don't build up this situation now, what will happen later will appear to be ungrounded in the plot."

You are assuming far too much that I am "angry" Nao. I am simply trying to explain to everyone who has been bitching about this entire volume, not JUST you, that endless complaining about a shift to worldbuilding instead of pure action is not merely pointless, but in my opinion, disrespectful to the author. It comes across not as criticism, but as demands that the author stop writing THEIR story, and instead write YOURS.

And as I said, if you think you can do better, then write your own story. It's far more productive than endlessly yelling about how you don't like how someone else's story is progressing.

          • I'm tired of this, this is going in circles. Let me be clear: I've NEVER said I think I could craft a story as good as a professional writer, never implied it nor even have I contested you on that, please stop justifying your point with it. That I criticize a work I like doesn't mean I THINK I can do it better.

To be honest I don't know how good of a writer you are, but if you claim you do it regularly then I suggest you try to read objectively your comments, they OOZE implied anger and bitterness.

Also, what you are ordering me to do is to shut up and be grateful you or other writers pump out stories of differing qualities without any sort of personal criteria. Sorry but you are apparently the one that forgot how to be a reader.

Lastly, while I do agree that crafting a good story needs slow and deliberate lore building and set ups... come on, consider the current medium of Tsuki, this is a webnovel, the amount of these kind of novels that feel cohesive and planned from beginning to end is way, way too few. The only one that comes to mind right now is The experimental log of the crazy lich and Trafford's trading club. Expecting all webnovel authors to have a "master plan" is kind of crazy

Picking on me to try to reach all the unhappy fans isn't the best way to "tell us off" btw, get down your high horse.

          • I said this to the author so lemme say same to you. The pauper knows not the struggles of the rich and vice versa. As a writer and a reader I can confidently tell you that there are certain things I had to learn when I became an author. The first is that it is not easy having to publish at least a chapter a week especially when you've got other things going on. I had to cancel a certain contract I had because it was becoming too much of a chore for me. And I hadn't decided writing was going to be my career.

          • Well I will agree with the increasingly obvious pointlessness, since you are just going to twist the language to justify yourself. "It would be better if they did it my way, but I'm not saying I could do it better, it just would be better if they did, you know."

That's how you sound to me. Sorry that you felt my efforts to have an actual discussion was "picking." but I will cease responding from here on.

          • Well, minus the profanity, and the sense of anger, that was my point. At no point was I remotely as aggressive as either of you are portraying. From my point of view, I was merely explaining myself calmly.

    • Yeah, I get you.
While I enjoy moments of progress in Tsige, or Makoto being a boss, it is so painfully slow!
I want the plot to move forward... Did Trashmoki completely ruin the Empire yet? Is Hibiki going to do anything? How are the demons? Is the war going to continue? So many questions still not answered.
      (╥﹏╥)

  • If any children get traped in the slime farm i pray so that they do not become the next hentai premise.

  • Suddenly seeing the name Dio in this novel, it always surprises me before I realize that there's character named dio in the novel
