Maou – Chapter 75: Epilogue – Confrontation with the unknown

TLN: I apologize for the short chapter, this one is meant to be released alone since it is -as you can see- an epilogue. This was the last chapter before it went on an ‘hiatus’.
Next chapters we will be entering the new arc that the author has been recently uploading.

Also, remember when I said I had a good candidate? Scratch that, it went in a pretty slow downhill, till a point where it just took a nosedive… so it is back to the search.

I think I am going to be releasing a little bit slower than usual now since I am going to prioritize the search instead.

The Demon Lord and the Witch go down the long flight of stairs and step into the dungeon.

Of course, there’s not a single soul there, and it had turned into a space where there’s not even a sound ringing. It was as if the attack Maou released had brought silence to the whole dungeon.

“This is the dungeon Chief was talking about, right?” (Yuu)

“Umu, it is pretty quiet.” (Maou)

Right now the city is in chaos. Even so, looking at the number of monsters left, Otaglasses and the three stars should be able to deal with them without leaving a single one behind.

As long as a Boss level monster like the Hydra doesn’t show up, Yukikaze and Mikan won’t be lacking in ability either.

“Chief, this place is dark and creepy, isn’t it?” (Yuu)

“Well, yeah.” (Maou)

Yuu was acting as if she were saying ‘I am scared’ as she wrapped her arms around Maou’s arm. If Tahara were to see this, he would shout ‘you are the scariest one here!’.

“It is kind of like a haunted house. More so because there’s some sort of weird lighting.” (Yuu)

“Y-Yeah…” (Maou)

Yuu was casually pushing her well-shaped breasts on Maou’s arm with reddened cheeks. If Tahara were to see this, he would shout ‘The haunted house is your damn hospital!’.

Maou coughed hurriedly, and tells her that they will be jumping down with Mass Teleport.

“Sorry for overstepping here, but Chief…how about confirming each floor one by one? There’s the chance that something might have fallen. We should take our time  exploring everything slowly.” (Yuu)

“N-No, I do want to do that, but I am in a bit of a hurry here. Now then, let’s go.” (Maou)

“Aah, Chief–ahn…” (Yuu)

Yuu looked at him with regret, but Maou grabbed her body, and they forcefully jump to the 15th floor. This was the floor where he had previously seen the ‘prison’. Looks like this strange sight had even caught the eye of Yuu, she looks at both sides with a sharp gaze.

“Looks like quite the old…no, ancient prison.” (Yuu)

“Yuu, what do you think was ‘imprisoned’ here?” (Maou)

“Thinking about it normally, humans. Moreover, living beings close to the size of an adult.” (Yuu)

Maou looks at the cells again and it was certainly as Yuu said. Humans being imprisoned here made the most sense. Moreover, receiving quite the bad treatment.

When the two go one floor lower, there were also prison cells lined up there too. There’s ones that were made similarly, but there were also some which were made in a sturdier way.

The lower they went, the bigger the floors got, and the number of cells increased.

Yuu was unfazed, but for Maou, this was an ‘abnormal’ space.

Who and for what reason did they make something like this? Why was there the need to make it inside a dungeon? This was something that Maou couldn’t understand at all.

But Yuu said this in a light tone as if she were talking about the weather of tomorrow.

“—They might have been keeping humans here as pets.” (Yuu)

“Haha!” (Maou)

Maou laughed lightly at that, but those words strangely remained in his ears.

This place is brimming with monsters. It wouldn’t be strange for people to go crazy being imprisoned in such a place.

No, there’s no way to stay normal.

“Whichever the case, I don’t like it.” (Maou)

“It is as you say. The happiness and management of the masses should all be as Chief desires.” (Yuu)

“Umu.” (Maou)

Maou simply nods, but he was screaming internally.

If he could shout it out loud, he would go: ‘I don’t want to manage something like that!’.

But the moment they arrived at the lowest floor, the 20th floor, the atmosphere of the floor took a drastic turn.

Only the expression of Maou changed.

What was there was…a modern factory.

Only this floor, its floor and its walls were clearly made of concrete, with naked steel frames, and several belt conveyors moving.

There were cut monsters and even burned humans on top of the belts being carried somewhere. There were also clothes, edged tools, and even the walls of houses on those belts, and it was as if they were gathering things without concern of what it was.

“I see. Looks like we have been guided to a different floor.” (Maou)

“…Chief?” (Yuu)

“No, you see, this is quite different from the ‘20th floor’ I was told of before. Yuu, is this floor not any different from the ones of before?” (Maou)

“Yeah…there’s boorish bare rocks and it is a dim space.” (Yuu)

The 20th floor that Maou heard Yukikaze describe was a normal one.

There’s no way to mistake it for this modernistic facility.

What Maou had a faint feeling of…had now changed into certainty.

“Looks like it knows my ‘identity’.” (Maou)

The gun he found at the 15th floor, the 20th floor that’s not the same as usual; it must be having fun showing him things that others don’t know. Is it provoking him, or is it trying to tell him something?

“Please wait, going alone is—” (Yuu)

“If something were to be pulled with the two of us at once, we wouldn’t be able to deal with it. If a status effect hits me, heal me without restraints. Okay?” (Maou)

“Y-Yes…” (Yuu)

Maou continues on deeper within this place where there’s several conveyor belts lined up. There were monsters and humans equally being carried away.

Putting it bluntly, it was a creepy sight, one that would make a normal person falter. But the legs of Maou didn’t stop.

The door at the deep part of the factory opened automatically.

Is it moving with electricity, or is it moving with magic? When Maou makes a single step in, a single answer was brought.

“I see, so it is a recycling factory, huh.” (Maou)

When he looks below, he could see that the monsters and humans that were being carried away were being dropped into some sort of giant blast furnace, and from there, they turned into new monsters and carried off.

In the world, there’s the concept of reincarnation after death, but what was happening in front of his eyes was far from that.

Also…the countless crystals lined up in the room.

There were small ones but also gigantic ones, easily surpassing the hundreds; all piled up, and it had become an art piece in itself.

It was a sight that brought chills, and even Maou gulped.

“Does it want me to give an art evaluation here?” (Maou)

Maou asks this…at the party that prepared this and must be waiting for him. Someone that has unknown magic; someone that has unknown technological knowledge.

The recycling of life that’s happening before his very eyes, the gun that uses solar energy; just the things that he knows were already enough to surpass the technology of modern Japan.

Maybe it heard the question of Maou, the crystals all project the same answer at the same time.

{Let’s play, Maou.}

Seeing the letters projected, Maou silently lights up a tobacco.

Maybe it didn’t like the reaction of Maou, several of the crystals cracked. And then, new words were projected in the  crystal.

{Play, Maou.}

They were similar words, but the meaning was different.

The former one was still an invitation, but the latter one had a stronger and more coercive kind of wording to it. Seeing this, Maou takes out the tobacco from his mouth, and flicks it right onto the crystals.

The lighted up tobacco hits a crystal, and rolls its way down. An instant later, the crystals began to make a loud noise, and crack one after the other.

The last one remaining, the crystal at the center, had red letters projected.

{I will play with you, Maou.}

Seeing this, Maou makes a daring smile.

“So you finally show your real nature.” (Maou)

{I will play with you I will kill you I will play with you I will kill you I will play with you I will kill you I will play with you I will kill you I will play with you I will kill you I will play with you I will kill you I will play with you I will kill you I will play with you I will kill you I will play with you I will kill you I will play with you I will kill you.}

“Haha!” (Maou)

Maou secretly felt fear at that message, that evil intent.

But the strength of will of this man…managed to even retract the fear welling up, making his appearance sharper than ever.

That’s right, this man has been pushing through his own will by crushing his weakness the stronger the adversity is. Even if in the eyes of others it would look like a ragged bandaged up struggle.

“Acting the superior even when in this rusty factory? That’s a good joke.” (Maou)

Maou had steeled himself and looks straight at the crystal, saying this in a dignified manner.

That’s right, this man has a weapon.

And he also has a chance of victory.

A peerless ‘world’ that a normal modern person would by no means have.

The game world that he created with 15 years of hardships and is a bundle of cheats.

The letters in the crystal flow down one after the other, and the contents changed dizzily.

{GAME OVER.}

Maou throws the Sodom Fire at that message without saying a word.

The crystal was broken to pieces and rained like sparkling snow, and within all that, Maou gives out a declaration of war.

“—I don’t know who or what the hell you are, but I will tell you one thing.” (Maou)

Maou then takes one deep breath and shouts.

“There’s nothing impossible for me and the Grand Empire!” (Maou)

Maou waves his jet-black coat and leaves the room.

Since this day, the sparks of the intense battle between the Demon Lord and the thing that controls this parallel world had been kindled.

  1. This chapter left me speechless. Being around for awhile, I’ve seen some scary gruesome things. The first thing that came to mind as the author described this evil entity and his gruesome factory( of recycling humans and monsters on conveyor belts) is the hell-scenes in “Event Horizon” and “Hellraizer”. While “It” can be a demonic “Jigsaw” with its evil “I will play with you I will kill you I will play with you I will kill you” Thanks for the translation and upload! This story has indeed capture my attention. Came across this story after watching the few episodes of the anime, reading the manga and coming here for the novel.

  2. Thanks por the chapter! maybe you could translate Marginal Operation that’s been dead for 2 years now

  3. Aaaah! I didn’t see this notification?! Thanks for the chapter! DX

Oh boy. We finally have the real antagonist of the story? From the sounds of it…it’s a god, right? The so-called Great Light? Or maybe something more similar to Akira, a “creator”?
Whatever the case, Maou is gonna keep going at his own pace.

Yuu playing the scared girl is pretty funny. Despite being a horror story villain in her own right, she manages to act pretty flirty and cute. Kinda reminds me of Mio in that “silly, but don’t mess with her” way.
Of course, the main difference between the two is that when Yuu does it, it could theoretically be an act to get what she wants, so a smart man like Tahara would advise you to never buy it, no matter how cute she looks.

…I wonder how she’d react to playing a horror game? A gruesome one like Dead Space or Mad Father.

    1. Recently, I’ve come across an isekai manga and ended up adoring the 4 chapters I’ve read of it. I was going to recommend that novel for the candidate list, but it turns out that someone else just started on it, like, a week ago.

So instead, I’m just dropping this here to add the story to the reading lists of anyone interested, and if the translation doesn’t go anywhere after a while, maybe it can be considered. The premise of the story is essentially: “The MC doesn’t have any cheats or stats to give him an edge in the new world, but survives because Earth is just a more evil place than his new home.”

Name: Isekai Demo Bunan ni Ikitai Shoukougun (I’ve came to another world, but I hope to live safely)

The novel translator is a newbie doing this as a way to practice the language, and it very much shows in the quality. Not that I’d hold that against them, considering Reigokai himself started TsukiMichi ages ago for the same reason and…well, here we are, with one completed series, one translated to the most recent, and over 300 chapters into the novel that started it all.

  4. Hi Regokai!
Could you please post few chapters of QUALIA in the meantime, when you are still in searching phase maybe? Like, pretty please :3

    1. I gotta say, it was a pretty sick chapter. I think it did the source justice, at least.
Clearer emotions, and even a little hinting at Makoto’s “real” personality.

  5. You’re looking for something to pick up? May I recommend https://www.novelupdates.com/series/mobile-fortress-saratoga-silvery-sword-princess-became-my-servant/ (https://ncode.syosetu.com/n7167co/)? Sadly, it hasn’t been updated in over 2 years, but the author is still active in Syosetu, and there’s a published LN volume, so there’s hope that it’ll get picked back up again later. Anyway, it has 150+ chapters already, plenty to enjoy. I’ve translated a few chapters myself, but my motivation is fickle and I’m far from fluent in Japanese, releases are few and far between, so I’d be happy to have someone else pick it up instead. I’ve only read up to the end of the first volume of the raws, but it seems like a pretty decent story so far.

  6. thank you for all of your hard work as for next projects this lowly fan request my lord for either spirit migration, the flying whale island or any of the golem series such kirameki golem or I am just a pebble, once again thanks for all your effort me lord

    ________________________

A chapter that leaves many doubts. Especially because if they say that it is the cap in which we update, questions remain outside the story such as:
    – How long has the author paused after this chapter? Are there announcements that I am already working on the continuation?
    – Will the anime already announced reach this point?
    – What will be the new project that Uncle Reigokai will take?

  8. thanks for the chapter,
and take your time to fine a “Grand Good Great” LN to translate. like what you said before they are like your soul mate and you need to search really good for it.

  9. Thanks 4 the chapter!

What about picking up “Spirit Migration”? I don’t think anyone has picked it up since the last translator dropped it. Or “My Entire Class has been Reincarnated – I Became the Weakest Skeleton”?

  10. First of all thank you Regokai as always for bringuing us this wonderfull story, and the effort you put while translating. Now I want to go and slap the author for considering this a a good place to go to ‘hiatus’ I mean ge literally leaved us naked with nothing to hold on, thank god he took this project again. I hope we guet a proper resolution.

  11. Great work as always, Reigo-san. Also, what an interesting epilogue. It seems there’s more into his summoning than what is currently known. As if the world already knew about him even before he was summoned..? Idk. I’m just guessing. hahaha. Thanks for the chap!

  12. what about Last Bosses in Heroless Worlds?
i read the prologue but, that’s it, i want to know more. thanks

  13. First thanks for the translating. For your new project I recommend “Yuusha, Aruiwa Bakemono to Yobareta Shoujo”, because the other novels of the author (that are currently complety translate) are gems.

  14. Why did I reply twice? What types of novels are you looking for? I know a few that have been inactive for almost a year… by the translators not authors.

  15. Gotta love an epilogue that raises way more questions than it answers. Also feeling a little weird about the way Akira seems to figure out motives or the reasons for things but doesn’t convey them to the audience, like with the ring. With this chapter I’ve gotten even more confused asking myself “Wait, what parts does he understand and what parts does he not?” because it hasn’t really explained any of it to us.

    1. I also haven’t the faintest idea what we were supposed to interpret from the end there… Was the crystal trying to… do something, but failed? Was this just supposed to be a “I can see into your mind and it’s interesting! Muahahaha! Anyways just wanted to let you know”?
      What was the POINT?

    2. From what I can tell, based on what he says and what the story implies, he has a vague understanding, usually nothing more than “this could be bad” or “they are up to something”. In response he acts vague himself, allowing those he interacts with to jump to conclusions. Since he trusts his durability and the judgement of his followers, his confident bluster makes it appear that things went according to his plans, and when it doesn’t match his goals, he uses his overwhelming power to force the outcome to match what he desired.

      1. It’s possible. I’ve always assumed he just acts that way around the people who think he’s smarter than he actually is. He was by himself in the thing with the ring, though, and (as far as I know) the story’s always told us when he’s just being vague in order to sound like he knows what he’s doing.

  16. Sorry if I’m spoiling it… Did the author delete the chapters after this and start over? Because I remember reading ahead to when the other Butterfly sister showed up, he let Yuu do an experiment on him, and they expanded the village to accept the survivors of the dungeon aggression?

    1. Careful now, you’re treading into spoiler territory there, even if you aren’t sure about it. But yes (as far as I understand) the author deleted all the chapters they had written after this and put it on “haitus”, only recently starting to write or re-write them.

      1. Treading into? That was a straight up spoiler. We’re not sure if the author is rewriting the chapters, so as far as WN readers are concerned, that’s still canon, and thus unfiltered spoilers.

  17. te recomiendo

    未開の惑星に不時着したけど帰れそうにないので人外ハーレムを目指してみます
I Got Stranded in an Uncivilized Planet and Since It Seems I Can’t Go Back Home I’ll Aim Towards an Inhuman Harem

capítulos cortos pero son mas de 600

  18. If you don’t mind more suggestions, maybe Spirit Migration, Golden Word Master or maybe Isekai Tensei – Kimi to no Saikai made Nagai koto Nagai koto

      1. There was someone, but someone over at Rebirth hit him with a DMCA so he stopped. Can’t prove it was them, but he was in talks with them before it happened and their talk didn’t end well. Only one technically working on it is Meteor of Rebirth, but it takes months just for a chapter from her so she’s not really a motivated translator.

  19. Not gonna lie, this chapter left me with several ??? especially the way Maou acted.
Only way I can see this is that Akira and Maou’s personalities are mixing without his notice. Cause there’s no way Akira acted like that in real life.

    1. He may have had these tendencies, but wasn’t really able to show any of it due to his position. Now he is effectively a walking natural disaster that, at current, any living being simply cannot stand against. He isn’t even at full power yet, maybe that goes to your head a bit. He also has a lot of pride for his game and this thing is taking potshots at that.

Kunai may have been made as his sorta dark I want be this guy, while the dragon was his more childish good side manifest. Now that he actually has the power to be that way he can act that way especially when people are reacting positively, also he has a Kunai filter where if he tries to say something it gets “translated” to something more fitting.

Also he is wearing a ring that stores chaos or something, that may also be causing side effects.

    2. Didn’t he said that “if” He wants to complete control the avatars that he made he had to accept them so he can control them right? Akira(ego)+kunai(id)+zero(superego)= the real akira right?

      1. Hmm, a decent idea. I dunno what ego and id refer to within the psyche, but I do know what the superego is. It is the part of you that tells you, that you ‘should’ behave in a certain way, that you ‘shouldnt’ do this or that. Because society has expectations of you, because certain behaviors are acceptable or not, etc. etc. (At least, this is my vague understanding)

For example, your friend invites you out one day, to hang out or whatever. However, you aren’t in the mood, but your superego tells you that you can’t just say that to them. You can’t just tell them, “sorry, friend, but I’m just not in the mood for your particular brand of social interaction right now”. So instead you say, “sorry, but I can’t today. I’m sick”. Instead of telling your friend the truth, and possibly hurting their feelings, you lie to them, you lie to your friend, a much worse thing to do, cos your superego tells you to. Damm you, superego!

Anyways, so, point is, Zero deffos is not the superego. He has no conception of society’s idea of appropriate behavious.

    3. In a certain way, I think this is what Akira really was like. Both Maou and Zero had a bit of Akira in them from the start, and those flashbacks have been there just to show that he has some “blindly tyrannical” tendencies to himself.

Among other things, he’s the one who setup most, if not all, of the Grand Empire in the first place, including the backstories of Maou, Yuu, and Tahara. He is, roughly speaking, himself the type of person who would have been the Emperor of the Grand Empire (assuming it has such a position).

    4. Thats rigth, thats one of the reasons I want to go and beat the author for dropping the story like that. Thank the almigthy he took this project again.

      1. Rather than dropping the story, he’s probably focusing on the LN. It was even adapted to manga, so congrats him.
